  • A^ - Animal song or mention of. Includes birds, ugly bugs, and insects.
  • B^ - Beatles 
  • C^ - Cockney - no precision intended
  • C* - camp fire song
  • D^ - mentions death or dying.  There are situations where the topic, in song, is best avoided.
  • E^  - ethnic other than those already accommodated
  • $ -  American - no precision intended
  • F^ - in a film, musical or show (Can't distinguish as need M for the sea and S for Scots)
  • G&S - Gilbert & Sullivan more here
  • G^ - gloom, perhaps doom  There are situations where the song, is best avoided.
  • H* - Hymn - generally includes religious songs.  Spirituals come further down.
  • H^ - Hawaiian - often including the U^ songs 
  • I^ -  Irish
  • J^ - Jamaica - calypso (C^ used for Cockney)
  • K^ - children's song
  • M^ - mariner songs, sea shanties etc.  Rivers are included but not Handel's Water Music (!)
  • O^ - Oz - Australia
  • P^ - can be played on the bagpipe
  • R^ - rock era - includes songs with dates within the era but not necessarily rock & roll 
  • S*  - spiritual
  • S^ - Scots
  • T*  - traditional - see foot of page
  • T^  -  train/railroad song
  • U^ - Ukulele song - often including the H^ songs 
  • V^ - Victorian
  • W^ - Welsh
  • WW - either WW1 or WW2, some both
  • Y^ - youtube - many include annoying adverts to be clicked away before starting.  Decay rates are high.

  • No attempt is made to include rap and other modern genres which are beyond this author's comprehension.


    Note on trad songs  - depending on how old you are for some, it means written in or before 1930 - WW1 songs sung in WW2 are trad but not WW2 songs themselves
